There is a high degree of confusion and myth surrounding the term Data Governance. What is it? Do I need it? How do I go about implementing it? Part of this confusion is because the need for, and the implementation of Data Governance will vary from organisation to organisation. Therefore the term Data Governance will mean something different to all of us.
One source defines Data Governance as:
‘… the overall management of the availability, usability, integrity, and security of the data employed in an enterprise.’
Our interpretation of Data Governance is that it is a comparatively new concept with an emerging set of disciplines and processes with evolving definitions.
It is born from the need for data that can be trusted, as more and more businesses look to translate high volumes of data into useful information for use in day to day key decision making.
This is why we see Data Governance as an integral part of any new or existing Business Intelligence initiatives.
You may be well travelled on your Data Governance journey, or yet still to take the first step.
